Basketball shoots for 6th conference win

The TWU Pioneer basketball team continued to participate in conference play over the winter break and currently boast a 6-2 conference record. TWU is currently ranked 3rd in the South Central Region Media Poll.
On Jan. 17, the Pioneers battled back late in the game to defeat the Tarleton State TexAnns 61-58. At the end of the first quarter, the Pioneers fell behind the TexAnns 32-15, but the seasoned squad battled back to overcome the deficit throughout the second half. Freshman Kara Mitchell stepped her game up and led the team with 18 points – her career-high – and sophomore Alexis Nezianya led the team with 10 rebounds.
On Jan. 21, the Pioneers gained a 57-40 conference win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Pioneers traveled to Junell Center in San Angelo to face the Angelo State Rambelles on Jan. 24 and lost 81-78 after a back-and-forth lead changing game.
Coming off of a two game win streak, the basketball team will be traveling to Lawton, OK tonight for a conference game with Cameron University. The Pioneers and Aggies will begin play at 5:30 p.m.
The Pioneers will close out January with a road game at Midwestern State University on Jan. 31 at 4 p.m., hoping to repeat the Jan. 2 defeat of the Mustangs 71-45 in the Kitty Magee Arena.
Thirteen basketball players were named on the Lone Star Commissioner’s Honor Roll by earning at least a 3.30 GPA for the past fall semester. The TWU basketball team also recently landed the 23rd spot in the Top 25 Women’s Basketball Division II Media Poll for the first time in school history.
