Historic start for TWU soccer

Texas Woman’s soccer team is making history with its best start in program history. After eight straight wins, their record now stands at 11-1. Since Lone Star Conference matches began, the Pioneers have worked to maintain their successful streak with the intention of carrying it all the way through the postseason tournaments.

“Starting 8-0 means a lot to us because we know how much work has gone into getting here,” sophomore Janelle Lozano said. “We have stayed consistent, trusted each other, and continued to push each other every day. We are proud of the start, but we also know the season is far from over, so we want to keep building on it.”

The Lone Star Conference consists of 15 high-level teams. Conference play is almost three months of fierce competition, grueling practices and many hours spent on the road, so the team must stay disciplined and consistent.

“Our mindset going into conference is knowing that we are a really good team, but there is still a lot to improve on, so make sure that we aren’t getting comfortable and still striving to get better,” senior Ailyn Oliveros said. “Preparing for each game starts with focusing on film, weights, and practice. Each game is its own battle, and making sure we pay attention to the small details is really important.”

The Pioneers already made history this season, but they are not treating that accomplishment as the finish line. With the rest of conference play and postseason ahead, the team continues to build on what they started, taking the season one game, one practice and one day at a time. If they keep pushing forward, they still have more history to make.

“Our goals are to grow and learn as a team as much as possible,” junior Gianna Antovoni said. “To allow adversity to be our friend and go as far as we can!”
