The Pioneers faced off with the Tarleton State TexAnns last weekend, where they claimed their fourth Lone Star Conference series sweep of the season.
Despite being ranked behind the No. 4 TexAnns in the LSC, at No. 6, the Pioneers managed to win all three games with wide margins – 8-3, 11-7 and 4-1. On Fri., April 7, the first pitch, and strike, was thrown at 6 p.m. by Junior Pitcher Abby Walker (transfer from Tyler JC). During the bottom of the fourth inning, Sophomore Third baseman Tylia Slyvestine hit a home run out past the left field fence to put three more Pioneer runs on the board.
The second game started out slow for the Pioneers, as Tarleton jumped to a 6-1 lead as the top of the third inning came to a close. Senior Shortstop Katy Stephens got things started for the Pioneers in the bottom of the third with a solo home run past the left field fence to bring the score to 6-2. By the time the third inning came to a close, TWU had rallied to close the gap to 7-6. Increased momentum in the fourth inning brought the score to 10-6 before the final score of 11-7 after seven innings.
The final game in the series began shortly after with Walker in the circle once more for the Pioneers, where she finished with a 13-6 record. Stephens started TWU’s scoring during the third inning with a single RBI to right center. Single runs during the fourth and fifth innings brought TWU to a 3-0 lead before Tarleton got on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly from Catcher Nyka Woods during the sixth inning. Another RBI from Stephens helped TWU to the 4-1 win.
The Pioneers will travel to Wichita Falls for a series with Midwestern State University on Thurs., April 13 at 6 p.m. and will play a doubleheader on Fri., April 14 starting at 1 p.m.
