Mayor’s initiative creates opportunity for Denton community to reach out, share experiences

Denton Together Coalition – Town Hall Meetings
On Thursday Feb. 18, Denton Together Coalition (DTC) will hold a town hall meeting in Student Union Room 207 from 12-1 p.m.
Denton Together Coalition is an initiative created by Mayor Chris Watts to bring community leaders together to generate ideas and relations that can support community engagement.
DTC includes TWU, UNT, North Central Texas College, Denton Independent School District, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Denton PD and numerous community leaders and churches.
DTC Mission
According to the City of Denton website: “[DTC] is a network of community stakeholders working together to promote effective and positive community relations and to respect diversity across Denton.” The main objectives are to reach out to the community and hear their concerns, praises and experiences from living in the community.
TWU representatives for DTC
TWU representatives for the coalition are Executive Director of the TWU Office of Diversity, Outreach and Conclusion Becky Rodriguez and Assistant Director of the TWU Office of Diversity, Outreach and Conclusion Michelle Prudhomme-Coleman, Vice President of the TWU Division of Student Life Dr. Monica Mendez-Grant, TWU Director of Public Safety Elizabeth Pauley and Special Services Lt. Jennifer Niederhaus
TWU’s Involvement
In an interview, Rodriguez and Prudhomme-Coleman shared their thoughts about the coalition and the meeting to be held on TWU’s campus.
According to Rodriguez, TWU student Sheryl English serves as chair for DTC. She said: “That is exciting for us because not only are we represented as an institution, but we also have a student as a co-chair of the committee.”
Prudhomme-Coleman added: “The name Denton Together Coalition just shows that we are visible in a way that shows people we are working together not only with our campus partners, but our neighboring campuses, to create this awareness for the issues around and the impactions. It is just one more layer of opportunity for us to connect to our community.”
Great opportunity for TWU students
According to Prudhomme-Coleman, DTC and the town hall meetings are great opportunities for TWU students. She said: “It gives the community the opportunity to learn more about TWU and for us to show the community how we are supporting our students and other community members. It is also a nice, safe place for students to come and share what is on their minds.”
Prudhomme-Coleman added: “We really encourage our students to be involved because their voice is important in being heard and we want them to feel like they have the space to be able to do that and see what other community leaders are doing to address those concerns.”
