TWU softball ends on positive note

The Texas Woman’s University Softball team recently went head to head against the Western New Mexico Mustangs Friday, April 26. Pitcher Bailey Turner kept the Mustangs from scoring most of the game, however her efforts were not enough. The Pioneers ended up taking the “L” with a score of 2-0. Even though the game was a loss, this game marked the first ever TWU Pride game. Former head coach Dianne Barker threw the opening pitch to encourage inclusion throughout TWU.

The following Sunday, the Pioneers faced off against the Mustangs again, this time in a double header. The first game left TWU defeated with a score of 6-0. However, the second game was an emotional victory for the team, ending with a score of 2-1. Saturday marked Senior Day for the Pioneers, and the girls went out with a bang. In the bottom of the ninth, senior outfielder Lindy Kennedy hit a ground-rule double, landing the team on the scoreboard. Senior Tylia Sylestine finished off the inning with a single, pushing the girls to victory. Four seniors, Sylestine, Kennedy, Alexis Elizondo and Jordan Kisselburg, and one sophomore, Alexa Neifert finished off their softball career on a win. “They’re a special group. It’s been special for me to coach them.” Barker told Assistant Director of Athletics for Communication Brian Magloyoan.
