Pioneers sweep WNMU

The Pioneer softball team competed against Western New Mexico University at Pioneer Field this weekend and added four wins to their record, bringing their win-loss record to 13-10.

On March 3, the Pioneers began their series of games against the Mustangs with 8 runs and a shutout, ending the game within five innings. In the bottom of the first inning, Senior Outfielder Nicole Nordie scored the first run against the Mustangs. Pioneers did not increase their lead until the bottom of the 3rd when Pioneers scored 5 more runs to widen the gap with the Mustangs to a 6-point lead. Pioneers completed the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The second match of the series against the Mustangs, Pioneers won with a 2-point lead against the Mustangs. Senior Infielder Katy Stephens scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Pioneers expanded their lead over the Mustangs with a home run scored by Nordie, bringing the TWU lead to 2-0. Junior Pitcher Abby Walker scored another run in the bottom of the fifth after a Mustang error. Mustangs ended the shutout in the top of the sixth and the game ended with a final score of 3-1 Pioneers.

On the second day of the series, the Mustangs closely missed a win against the Pioneers in the close third game of the season with a score of 9 – 8 Pioneers. Pioneers scored the first run in the bottom of the first inning. Pioneers grew their lead over the Mustangs to a 7 point lead until the top of the fifth when the Mustangs began narrow- ing that lead. Mustangs kept a tie with the Pio- neers until the bottom of the eighth inning when TWU broke the lead, winning the game 9 – 8.

In the final game against the Mustangs, the Pioneers won with an 8 point lead. In the bot- tom of the second, the Pioneers built a 3 – 0 advantage against the Mustangs. Pioneers ex- tended their lead in the bottom of the fourth to a 7 point lead after three runs were scored. Pio- neers won in the fifth inning with a score of 9 – 1.

Pioneers head to St. Edwards on Thursday, then to Texas A&M Kingsville the following weekend.
