Weekend basketball got off to an exciting start with a Saturday win for the Pioneers, but ultimately ended in disappointment.
Saturday, Nov. 17 marked the Pioneers’ first victory of the season, with TWU defeating West Alabama 70-56 on the first day of the Hilton Garden Inn Pioneer Classic. After a disappointing beginning to the game that saw the Pioneers trailing the Tigers by seven points, junior guard Carissa Moody led TWU to victory with a double-double in the second half. The Pioneers also looked to junior forward London Archer to help them bring home a win against the Tigers.
“I’m really proud of our team how we came out in the second half,” head coach Beth Jillson said. “We executed defensively and got some quick stops.”
The initial victory brought the Pioneers to 1-2 for the season, but they were unable to wrap up the weekend with a win.
In Sunday’s home game at TWU’s Kitty Magee Arena, TWU came up short against Oklahoma Christian, losing 78-69 in the Pioneer Classic finale.
The Pioneers faced steep point deficits in the second and third quarter, but battled to narrow the gap, ending the fourth quarter in an 8-0 run.
Moody and Archer once again performed strongly for the Pioneers, with Moody ending Sunday’s game with another double-double and Archer following close behind in point accumulation.
Ultimately, though, the Lady Eagles emerged victorious, resulting in the Pioneers falling to 1-3 for the season.
