Pioneer soccer team starts with success

Coming off of a great season in 2015, the Pioneer soccer team is continuing their success with a 4-1 start during the pre-season.

The season began with a trip to Colorado on Sept. 1, where the Pioneers faced off with Colorado State at Pueblo and came off the field with a 2-0 victory.

While in Colorado, they also played in Denver against Regis University on Sept. 3, where they triumphed with a 2-1 win.

After the team traveled back to Denton, they hosted the first game at the TWU Soccer Field on Sept. 10 against Dallas Baptist University. Junior midfielder Chelsea Martin scored the lone goal of the game at the beginning of the second half to help the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory.

The Pioneers hosted East Central University on Sept. 12. Martin also scored the lone goal of the game just after one minute of play for a 1-0 Pioneer win. This four-game win streak assisted the Pioneers to the best start in program history.

Most recently, the Pioneers faced off with Oklahoma Baptist University on Sept. 16. Their four-game win streak came to a halt with a 1-0 overtime loss. The Pioneer’s long battle with OBU ended with a Lady Bison shot made in the eighth minute of overtime.

Headed into Lone Star Conference play with the best record, the Pioneers will host West Texas A&M Wednesday Sept. 23 at the TWU Soccer Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Conference play will continue for the Pioneers at home on Sunday Sept. 25 against Eastern New Mexico at 2 p.m.
