Why every student should know their personality

We have all seen entertaining but ridiculous quizzes pop up on our social media feeds.“Find out what Disney Princess you are! What does your favorite Halloween candy say about your relationship status? What potato-based side-dish are you most like?” These quizzes can be fun and enjoyable, and people can often be found reading over results, squealing: “That’s so me!”

Personality tests can also be a wonderful way to learn more about yourself and make adjustments in your life to reflect that knowledge. These can aid your study and career choices and help you understand your strengths and weaknesses. It can also help you find and connect with other people like you.

I have a very contradictory personality and I never really felt like I fit in with any one group of people. I can hang out with the nerds, the cheerleaders, the slackers, the weirdos, the hippies, the band geeks, the artists, the jocks and more, but it always felt like only one part of me fit within each of these groups, but I never truly, completely, fit in.

When I took the “Myers-Briggs Type Indicator” for the first time I was blown away. Here it was, in print, everything that I have felt for my entire years of life. It accounted for all my contradictions and why they were there. I was connected with other people who share my unique personality type who could empathize with the struggles and blessings it brought.

The Myers-Briggs test works well because it places you on a scale in four different aspects, so you can see how severely you lean in one direction or the other. For example, someone may be extremely extraverted, introverted, or somewhere between the two. It works the same way between Intuition/Sensing, Thinking/Feeling, and Judging/Perceiving.

Human beings are complex and this test is flexible enough to fit a broad range of complicated people. I recommend it. The “Big Five” personality test is also very highly regarded.

Knowing all the wonderful things that legitimate psychology-based tests can reveal to us is a fantastic path to furthering self-discovery and improvement. However, it doesn’t hurt to know what your role in the zombie apocalypse would be too.
