Become Pioneer Prepared

By: Johnna Headley, Reporter

Last week, TWU Emergency Management hosted their first Preparedness and Pizza event on Wednesday Sept. 9 in the Pioneer Room, located in Hubbard Hall. Students and faculty who missed out on the first event can attend another event today from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Pioneer Room. A third and final event will be hosted from 12 to 1 p.m. next Wednesday, Sept. 23, in the Southwest Ballroom, located in Hubbard Hall. At each event there will be a topic over being Pioneer Prepared, free pizza (while supplies last) and a giveaway prize for students who attend at least two events; these students’ name will be in a drawing to win a personal disaster kit. The Preparedness and Pizza events are sponsored by the TWU Office of Emergency Management, and each week will cover a separate topic.

The first event of Preparedness and Pizza was focused on public health and covered communicable diseases – infection that can be spread from person-to-person or animals-to-people. Today’s Preparedness and Pizza event will cover severe weather awareness and will have special host Michael Fox from The National Weather Service. Next Wednesday, TWU Department of Public Safety Sergeant Bundick will have an active shooter awareness presentation.

In an email interview, Director of Emergency Management Blake Abbe shared: “We are challenging everyone this month to become personally prepared in order to Be Pioneer Prepared.” An important part of becoming prepared is to form a personal preparedness plan with your family or roommates: having contact with an out-of-town family member or friend, having extra copies of important documentation and creating a personal disaster kit (non-perishable food and water, medications, first aid kit, cash and other supplies that fit your personal needs). TWU Emergency Management encourages employees and students to send pictures of them becoming prepared for emergencies. Photos can be emailed to gabbe@twu.edu or tweeted to @TWUReady.

For students who were not able to attend an event, a live streaming of the presentation will be available on the TWU Emergency Management website (www.twu.edu/emergency). Also on the website there will be an informational story over each week’s topic.
