Don’t waste your time: The Popeyes sandwich is better

After the release of the best chicken sandwich thus far, the Popeyes versus Chick-fil-A feud has taken over social media, and spoiler alert; Popeyes is winning.

For those of you who are confused, Monday, Aug. 12, Popeyes added a new fried chicken sandwich to their menu. The new addition flew under the radar for a while until Aug 19, when Chick-fil-A posted a seemingly innocent tweet. Although Chick-fil-A did not tag or mention Popeyes in the post, this did not stop the fried chicken chain from responding with a tweet that launched a chicken sandwich war.

Moments after Popeyes posted their shady tweet, Twitter users have been vocal about which side they are on.

The mayhem did not just stay on social media.  Apex Marketing, an advertising firm based in Michigan, estimated that Popeyes earned $65 million in free advertising. Other restaurants like Wendy’s tried to jump on the bandwagon after seeing the amount of attention Popeyes received.

It was hard to get my hands on a Popeyes chicken sandwich, but after finally being able to experience it for myself, I can confidently say that their sandwich is much better than what Chick-fil-A offers. Chick-fil-A’s nuggets and waffle fries have a special place in my heart, but compared to Popeyes, the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich is bland.

Before some of you look at me crazy, I’m not the only one who thinks so.

“This is kind of a cop out, but I think they are both equally as good, “ Danae Daste, a junior deaf education major at Texas Woman’s University, said. “But I think that the spicy sandwich from Popeyes is better because the heat is less in your face. It’s subtle. You get enough chuck for your buck.”

Scroll through the hashtag, and you will see that, for the most part, the Twitter masses agree with me. Twitter is filled with hundreds of posts about why Popeyes is greater, and they’re not wrong.

Besides the amazing chicken sandwich, my favorite parts about this debate are the tweets and the unexpected way the story developed.

High school senior David Ledbetter used the long lines outside of his local Popeyes to encourage people to register to vote. While Ledbetter reminded people about voting, the internet was also filled with people trying to resell their sandwich for absurd amounts.

A Chick-fil-A worker even risked his job and snuck behind enemy lines just to check out the competition. After obtaining the sandwich, even he had to admit that Popeyes is better

Unfortunately, in an unpredictable turn of events, Popeyes recently announced that they are sold out of the chicken sandwich. Someone even held some Popeyes employees at gunpoint for the sold-out chicken sandwich.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Luckily for all of us, the restaurant pinky promised in a Twitter video announcement that the chicken sandwich would make a comeback.

When it does, no matter what restaurant you’re getting your chicken sandwich from, make sure to be nice to the workers. But if you love yourself, make sure you’re getting your chicken sandwich from Popeyes.
