Keep Denton Beautiful to hold Great American Cleanup

Keep Denton Beautiful, or KDB, is a nonprofit organization in Denton, Texas that aims to involve Denton neighborhoods, businesses and residents of all kinds to help create a more clean, beautiful city. According to their website, KDB’s mission statement is “To engage our community in creating a clean and beautiful Denton.” KDB is an organization that is modeled after Keep America Beautiful and its use of community style engagement.

KBD encourages people living in and out of Denton to join their mission or volunteer in the various projects they hold throughout the year with the goal of beautifying Denton. Every year, KDB has over 6,000 volunteers that participate in this mission. Most of KBD’ projects involve programs that include tree planting, cleanups, yard of the month programs, beautification and various youth programs.

One such project that is coming up on the calendar is the Great American Cleanup. The Great American Cleanup is an event that involves cleaning up all of Denton on a citywide scale. This event works to improve the health and natural beauty of the Denton community. This tradition is Denton’s longest-running and largest litter cleanup and beautification event in the history of the city. In fact, approximately 2,000 Denton residents are involved every year in the Great American Cleanup.

Saturday, March 23 will be the 31st Annual Great American Cleanup event. This event will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 1:00 p.m. All volunteers who sign-up will be assigned to clean certain locations of Denton citywide. Cleaning will go on from 9 to 11 a.m. Then, at 11 a.m. there will be a Volunteer Appreciation Party at the Denton Civic Center/Quaker Town Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At this event, all the volunteers will be provided a free lunch. The volunteers will have their choice from In-N-Out Burger, Leila’s Food Truck and Milpa Kitchen & Cantina. There will also be educational activity booths, bounce houses for the kids, music, contest prizes and more.

“Events like this help bring awareness to such an important topic and causes people to care more about the world we live in,” Becca Baergen, a first-year student majoring in dental hygiene at Texas Woman’s University, said.

“I love hearing that events like these exist,” Baergen said. “It makes me happy to know that Denton is doing something to take better care of the planet. It gives me hope that the future is in good hands.”
