Campus Parking Update

As most everyone is aware, parking on campus is sparse right now, but the daily struggle to find a place to park is all for the greater good. Construction on the new West Parking Garage on Oakland Street across from Margo Jones and between the Baptist Student Center and the Marketing/HR building continues to steadily progress. Students are a little frustrated with the lack of parking spots because TWU is a commuter heavy school, and many students aren’t able to show up early enough to snag a guaranteed spot every day. April Neal, a general studies student, said “It used to be if you had an 8:00 am class, you could get parking, but now it is just Monday – Thursday you can’t find a parking spot at all.” When the new garage is complete, it will be able to accommodate 600 vehicles in addition to housing a new spot for the Department of Public Safety and Human Resources.

In addition to the construction on the new parking garage, additional parking has been taken away in order for construction to begin for a new dorm building that will be going up in order to accommodate TWU’s growth in student population. This construction began in March, and workers are actively working on getting the foundation ready currently. Parking next to the soccer field has been fenced off for construction, but a new gravel parking lot is available to the east of the Facilities Management building, which is designated “all decal” parking.

Although construction is difficult to work around, just keep the end product in mind. Like Walt Disney famously said, “Keep moving forward.” And remember, walking a few extra steps is good for you.

Chief Sam Garrison from the parking office said, “We are just as excited as students for the parking garage to be up and running. Right now, it’s  looking like it will be finished sometime in October.” In the meantime, check out some of these tips from the TWU webiste to finish out the semester with better chances of getting a spot.

•Come early

•Check the big parking lots first

•Use the complimentary TWU Shuttle

•Stay for lunch and keep your spot
