With Fall approaching and the days getting shorter, the campus will soon become dark by early evening. In spite of this, campus life will continue as usual with students attending their 6 p.m. classes and spending their afternoons in the library, often emerging to see a pitch black sky.
Despite our reputable campus safety and one of the lowest rates of reported crime in the nation when compared to universities of similar size, Pioneers may find themselves frightened by the idea of heading across campus in the dark. However, with a quick call to the Texas Woman’s University Night Owls, they’ll be greeted with a simple and easy solution.
“Night Owls launched in January 2023 to enhance campus safety and provide peace of mind for students, faculty, and staff traveling at night,” Director of Parking Services Marcus Wenzel says. “Inspired by our department’s commitment to addressing concerns about nighttime mobility, the program offers a reliable, friendly service to ensure everyone feels secure.”
Created to foster a safer campus environment, TWU Night Owls is a student-staffed service that provides a friendly and approachable way for students, faculty and staff to travel across campus at night. Their services include walking with individuals to their destination and, when available, providing them with golf cart rides.
“Our department recognized the need for a non-intimidating safety option,” Wenzel says. “Walking with individuals reflects our commitment to building community trust and ensuring security through a ‘safety in numbers’ approach.”
Night Owls is free to everyone at TWU and available Monday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to midnight and Friday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. To request assistance, call 940-898-2293, and for support outside these hours, contact TWU Police at 940-898-2911.
