Whispers in the Dark

Disclaimer: This is a column about sex and sexy things. This is meant to entertain, inform, and answer those questions you’re too embarrassed to ask.

I’m going to get right to the point: sex is fantastic. I know; I was shocked when I found out too.

As we grew up, most of us were taught that sex is between two people who love each other. However, in today’s society, it seems like two people do not even have to like each other to get dirty. People all over the world love sex and love talking about sex. So why is it so hard for our generation to have an honest conversation about sex?

Today’s college kids seem to have an abnormal amount of pressure on them, and when it comes to sex, it’s no different. A lot of us focus too much on school and tend to forget to loosen up and have fun. College is about experiencing new things, and sex falls under that category as well. While sex is healthy and fun, we also have to remember the health component

Safety is your number one concern. The infamous Coach Carr from “Mean Girls” was kind of right; if you have sex you can “get pregnant and die.”

Contraception is the name of the game and you better be a champion. According to www.itsyoursexlife.com, if used correctly, condoms are the only form of birth control that protects against STDs and pregnancy.

So stock-up! Condoms can be bought at almost any corner store, the CVS Pharmacy on University St. sells a variety and is open 24 hours. Free condoms can usually be found at any health-clinic. Student Health Services on campus has a bowl set up, where students can grab as many condoms as they want or need. It’s like a bowl full of suckers, but more interesting.

I would like to stress the “only effective if used correctly” aspect again. Before getting intimate with someone read the instructions and practice putting them on, the banana trick is still good practice.

I have friends who refuse to buy condoms simply because they are female. If you fall under this category, I am here to tell you that you need to own your sexuality and understand sex is not just a man’s game. You should be prepared as well. Throw some condoms in your purse; you never know what situations may arise.

I have heard the excuse for not having condoms from men that they do not want to seem presumptuous. That seems like a nice gesture, but I am sure that your date would rather you be on the safe side and bring one just in case it is needed.

However, condoms are not the only way to protect yourself from having fun.

The pill, spermicide, emergency contraception and several other birth control methods are available. The best way to be safe is to research what fits your lifestyle and consult your doctor.

Remember having sex is fun, but only if you’re not getting pregnant and dying.
