As college students in 2015, everything we do is on our phones.

My iPhone is loaded with an app for every aspect of my life. It wakes me up, keeps track of my school assignments and even is the center for communication between my friends and me. So why not use it for dating?

Whether you have been swiping right for months like the hordes of college kids trying to find a companion or you are just jumping on the bandwagon, here are some tips for online dating.

The first thing you need to do is figure out what you want. This is essential to finding any sort of relationship with anyone. Whether you are looking for a one-night stand, the one you want to spend the rest of your life with or something in between, being honest with yourself about what you want is the best way to begin looking for it.

With hundreds of dating apps out there, it might be difficult to find the right one. Do a little investigating and find which app best fits you, then stick with it. Juggling getting to know multiple people across several platforms is overwhelming. I suggest Tinder for meeting local people with common connections and mutual interest. While I have personally only used Tinder, many of my friends have great luck with Plenty o’ Fish.

When setting up your profile, the most important thing is to be honest and to be yourself. Online dating requires you to sell yourself – choose a variety of nice photos, list your favorite book and share a few sentences about who you are. The biggest problem some have with online dating is people who are not honest, so be truthful. You do not want Nev and Max from MTV’s “Catfish” showing up at your door.

The most important rule of online dating is being safe. Stranger danger is not just something your parents warned you about to scare you. People lie online, and you never truly know who you are talking to. Do not give out a lot of personal information when chatting someone online. If you decide to meet with someone meet up in public, take your own transportation and always let friends know where you are going. Never get in a car or go somewhere private with someone you just met. Make sure you are smart about the decision you make.

Dating in college is meant to be a fun way to forget about the piles of homework you have due. So download an app and get to swiping.
