What really bothers me…

What really bothers me is the fact that you can get into more trouble for cheating on a college exam than you would for raping a fellow classmate. To top it off, when a victim does go to the authorities, it is not always handled in an appropriate manner.

Personal Experience

From experience, sometimes the investigators shame the victim. The justice system is put into place so victims can feel safe and offenders will be taken care of, but it doesn’t always work like that. Personally, I had physical evidence that something was done to me, and the investigators and jury did not take it seriously. I was shamed and the guy who committed the crime is walking free, living a perfectly happy life.

How I was treated has really stuck with me, and I know I can not be the only one who was treated unfairly. If I knew how I was going to be treated by the investigators, I would have never brought the case to them. Being told that “you’re lying” by someone who is supposed to have your back is an awful feeling. Some of my own friends did not believe me and took the criminal’s side. I was flabbergasted.

Don’t Take The Blame

It is ridiculous to say that if someone is consuming alcohol, they are asking to be raped. No one who is a victim of sexual assault is to blame. It does not matter what you are wearing, drinking or doing. No means no, and yes means yes. The amount of people who do not even ask if sexual activities are okay is ridiculous.

Be Courteous

I find it very charming when a partner verbally asks me if I want to do something sexual. It doesn’t matter how long I have known them or been in a relationship with them, asking for consent is always a sweet gesture and makes both parties feel comfortable.
