TWU artists are being presented with an opportunity to showcase their work in a gallery setting right here on the Denton campus with the eighth annual John Weinkein Juried Student Art Exhibition.
From Oct. 13 to Nov. 16, the exhibition, presented by the TWU Department of Visual Arts, will feature students’ work across multiple mediums including photography, painting, graphic design, ceramics, sculpture and art history.
The exposition will be hosted in TWU’s East|West Galleries in the Visual Arts building. An opening reception and award ceremony was held Oct. 13, and the gallery will be open to the public Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This year’s exhibition featured guest juror Kalee Appleton, a TWU alumna and photographer, who is an assistant professor at Texas Christian University. Appleton has selected artwork for display at the exhibition and will award monetary prizes to four undergraduate and four graduate students based on their submissions.
Gallery coordinator and technical director Blake Weld underscores the importance of events like these for aspiring professional artists in gaining recognition in the artistic community.
“The way we [artists] get recognized is through how many exhibitions we have on our CV…this is a great opportunity for students to start that CV, start that professional outlook so that when they leave here, they’ve got something going on and something to look forward to in the future,” Weld said.
Aside from professional development, Weld defines the exhibition as celebratory of student art at TWU.
“I always view it as a celebration of artwork that is going on in this department, and it’s an opportunity for students to show in a professional gallery to a very large audience instead of just inside their classroom,” Weld said.
Weld expects a significant turnout at the event with visitors from across the DFW area.
“We get people from all over Denton; we get people from Dallas that come up that are usually alumni-affiliated, and then other faculty from other departments come in,” Weld said.
