Walk the walk at Annual Pink Promises Breast Cancer Walk

Kicking off October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, TWU’s Health Promotion, a division under Student Health Services, is hosting a Pink Promises Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Tuesday, Oct. 2 from 5:30-7 pm. Also deserving of applause for volunteering is the Delta Delta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma and Sigma Gamma Rho. Starting at the gardens in front of Fitness & Recreational Center, participants will walk the half mile around the north end of campus and end their walk with an opportunity to hear a breast cancer story and honor survivors. The event is free and available for the TWU community and friends and family of TWU. T-shirts are going to be given out as well, but don’t show up late because shirts are first-come, first-serve. Plus, participants who make it the whole walk around campus will be rewarded with a cookie.

“We want students to make that promise to themselves to make sure that they’re taking care of themselves,” said Amy Allison, Assistant Director of Health Promotion.

PATH, a peer health education group, will be there with a resource table with breast models that include different sizes and types of lumps so that students can be more educated about how to properly conduct breast exams on themselves.

The Pink Promises walk has been happening annually as long as the staff of Health Promotions can remember, and The Lasso has written about the event each year as far back as research into the archives go. For good reason, this event always brings out up to 300 TWU students and community members who are happy to support one another with education about breast cancer and the importance of self-exams in addition to sharing stories.
