On Sat., Sept. 24, the Pioneer volleyball team hosted Texas A&M Kingsville in their fourth Lone Star Conference match. Despite recording more kills than Kingsville, TWU fell to the Javelinas in four sets.
Beginning the match with a victorious first set, the Pioneers failed to answer three straight set losses. Senior right side hitter and middle blocker Anna McGee tallied five kills in the first set, one being the first point of the set and another being the final 25th point. A five-run serving rally by sophomore outside hitter Makayla Mayfield gave TWU a 9-2 lead to continue the winning set. Junior middle blocker Sara Oxford tallied six of her 16 kills against the Javelinas during the first set.
Several runs by the Javelinas in the second set left the Pioneers in a deficit they were unable to overcome in the 25-15 set loss. During the middle of the set, four straight Javelina errors brought the Pioneers in the lead for the first time in the set with a 11-10 score. The only points scored then on after resulted from Javelina errors.
In the third set, the Pioneers fell once again 25-15, however all of their points, except two, were kills from various team members.
Beginning the fourth set strong with a 6-2 lead, the Pioneers held their own more efficiently than previous sets only fall short three points. Five kills from Oxford and six from junior outside hitter Kerstin Jenkins made up for many TWU points throughout the match.
With a string of home games lined up, the Pioneers will play Dallas Baptist University tomorrow, Sept. 27, before they continue LSC play against Midwestern State University and Cameron University next weekend.
