Tomorrow TWU, in collaboration with the Denton County Veterans Service Office and UNT, will honor the veterans of the United States with Veterans Day on the Square.

Veterans Day on the Square will begin at 11 a.m. on the courthouse lawn with TWU’s brass ensemble, posting of the colors by Veterans of Foreign Wars with the national anthem performed by the Sam Houston Singers Choir.

Congressmen Burgess will be in attendance and say a few words. Remarks from TWU President and Chancellor Dr. Carine Feyton and UNT President Dr. Neal J. Smatresk will be followed by guest speaker, United States Marine Corps Lt. Colonel Mark Roy.

The program will conclude with the presentation of the wreath from Denton High School, bagpipes played by Chuck Howell from the Denton Fire Department, and a rifle volley and echo taps from the Vietnam Veterans of America.

In an interview with The Lasso, Denton County Veterans Service Officer, Paul Bastaich shared: “Veterans Day is not about veterans celebrating veterans. It’s supposed to be about our nation celebrating the two percent that have served our country.”

Bastaich added: “That two percent needs to be elevated on this day by civilians that cherish freedom and the abilities to prosper as we do because of the service provided by our veterans.”

Inside the courthouse, an exhibit of military uniforms of past veterans dating back to WWI will be present. There will also be a Fallen Soldiers memorial attributed to the fallen soldiers of Iraq and Afghanistan, including Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Operation Enduring Freedom.
