TWU and UNT Honor Student Veterans

On Friday morning Veterans and their families gathered to be honored by the community at an event held by TWU and UNT. TWU Chancellor Dr. Carine Feyten was expected to speak at the event but was unavailable.

Instead, Veterans were addressed by Veterans Service Officer Paul Bastaich, who lead the event and gave a warm welcoming to everyone. Veterans were honored by the Sam Houston Singers, a charming choir of children who had to leave early due to another booking.

Congressmen Michael C. Burgess addressed and honored veterans by showing his support with recounting his own experiences visiting troops overseas. Exececutive Director of the Leadership Institute at TWU Major General Mary Saunders spoke also and made note of current improvements within the military for women and men.

Professor Dr. Anita Hufft made sure to emphasize how TWU helps veterans transition into civilian life by keeping a strong bond with veterans and maintaining a focus on classes with a military emphasis. She also recouned her past in the military and how she was shaped into her current career.

The event was followed by a bagpipe procession during the presentation of a wreath. The wreath was placed in front of the memorial located in front of the court house in the square. It represents honor for fallen soldiers and all who have served in war. The wreath was presented by both ROTC groups of UNT and TWU.

Vietnam Veterans of America, Denton were lead by Dan Washburn in the rifle volley and the Echo taps was performed by Larry Crossman and Doug Ebersole.

After the event, veterans could visit the gallery of military uniforms dating back to WWII on the third floor of The Court House.
