TWU honors cancer survivors

By: Sierra Taylor, Managing Editor

On Saturday Sept. 19, the first “Open Hands and Hearts” event will be held on the TWU Dallas Campus and will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This event was created by Assistant Clinical Professor Robin Abellera to honor and celebrate women who have been affected by cancer.

According to Abellera she was inspired by her friend Wanda, a two-time ovarian cancer survivor, when Abellera saw what her friend went through.

Abellera said: “She still had her strength and courage and amazing attitude, and I thought this would be a great way to honor women who are going through a difficult time.”

The event is open to the public with a $20 donation and is free to all cancer survivors.

The day features inspirational speaker Ruth Hatherly, a luncheon, and a style show sponsored by Chico’s, which also provided the fashion.

Abellera added: “I have friends who are volunteering and one former student who is a cancer survivor, and I asked if her she would like to be a model.”

This has been in the planning process for over a year, and they are expecting at least 80 people to attend. Abellera suggests that attendance could be even higher than that.

Abellera said: “We just want everybody to enjoy the day and remember that there is hope no matter what their adversities are.”
