One of TWU’s most favorable qualities, according to TWU junior Chace McGuinnis, is the sense of belonging and safety that this campus encompasses. McGuinnis’ opinion might be backed up by statistics- according to a 2015 report by bestcolleges.com, TWU was ranked one of the 50 safest campuses in the United States. The naming of TWU as one of the nation’s safest campuses was primarily due to the low number of crimes that TWU reported under The Clery Act, which specifies the crimes a university is legally responsible to make public.
Aside from TWU’s earning of an accolade, TWU’s recognition of its campus safety by best colleges served as a chance to highlight and acknowledge the men and women of TWU’s Department of Public Safety who are constantly working towards achieving a level of safety in which all of the individuals on the TWU campus can find comfort in.
Per their official website, TWU DPS is constantly working toward “Developing and maintaining a safe and secure environment for the university community,” and it shows.
TWU Junior and Resident Assistant, Jakob Haneger, has had to work with DPS in the past and said that “their presence and expertise in high-stress situations is a large part of what makes the atmosphere at TWU safe, which makes it easier for students to feel at home,” said Haneger. McGuinnis also feels the same way and said that “DPS presence is strongly felt, and the fact that you can ask for an escort to your car or dorm is a life saver.”
The services DPS uses to maintain a safe and secure campus can be broken down into four major groups: crime prevention services, public assistance services, SHARP courses and on-going programs. As many students know by now, DPS makes their presence known on campus through normal practices like walking and car patrol, but DPS is also available to students for a wide range of situations from personal protection, escorts and fire evacuation.
