Tulip Time in Texas

Hundreds of North Texans are flocking to the small town of Pilot Point for a chance to walk through the picture perfect tulip field.

Texas Tulips, a local pickyour- own tulip farm, owned by Pieter and Petra Koeman, is now open for its third consecutive season. Admission is $3.00, parking is free and visitors are able to pick tulips of their choice for $2.50 a stem.

Tulip season in this Texas town runs from Feb. 19 through mid April, weather permitting. Recent cold weather and slight sprinkles did not keep visitors from turning out in droves last Saturday, as cars full of eager tulip gazers lined up waiting to get in. Some visitors drove from out of the metroplex to get the chance to walk the fields. Jessica Reddington and her daughter Leighanne came all the way from Spring, TX, stating “we came in for this after we saw it on Facebook. I love it, it’s just so different.”

Owner Peiter Koeman is no stranger to the tulip business, his family comes from a successful 40-year-old tulip bulb company in the Netherlands, where they grew up watching the American television series, “Dallas” and were first introduced to the Texan lifestyle. After his sister Cora and mother visited the DFW area on vacation, they instantly knew this is where they wanted to be and made plans for the big move, selling the bulb company and making the transition.

Over 600,000 tulip bulbs are planted each December and the owners also sell the bulbs to those interested in growing their own bright and colorful tulips at home. “At the end of each season, I till all of the ground and rotate the rows so that there are no diseases” Peiter stated as he discussed the closing of each season in late April.

The fields host many different types of tulips with fun names such as Pretty Princess, a soft pink tulip with purple undertones, Pink Diamonds, a striking pink, and Strong Gold, a stunning yellow tulip. Picking baskets are provided and the staff will wrap your freshly picked flowers in your choice of tissue paper, complete with flower gel to help keep them fresh.

Whether you want to go take selfies in the tulips to post to social media or just want to get out of the city and enjoy the view of thousands of bright, colorful rows of tulips in the country, Texas Tulips is worth the short drive to get a small taste of Holland right here in North Texas.
