Trump’s First 100 Days

Congressional Address
President Donald Trump gave his first congressional address Feb. 28 where he highlighted his desire to end Obamacare, support the military and encouraged Congress to pass a bill about education. Many Americans were struck by the speech’s optimistic and diplomatic tone, which differed from that of Trump’s previous speeches. In his address, Trump stated “Education is the civil rights issue of our time” and called on Congress to pass a bill that “funds school choice for disadvantaged youth,” saying “families should be free to choose the public, private, charter, magnet, religious or home school that is right for them.” Trump also asked Congress to “repeal and replace Obamacare with reforms that expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and at the same time, provide better healthcare.”

Annual Budget Released
Trump released his first budget outline Feb. 28 which increased military spending by 54 million dollars and will sharply cut funding from non-military departments. Information has not yet been released about which departments will receive budget cuts.

Russian Cabinet
It was revealed that Attorney General Jeff Sessions met with Russian diplomat, Sergey Kislyak, while acting as an advisor to Trump’s election campaign and then lied about it under oath during his confirmation hearings. Kislyak is the same diplomat Michael Flynn was fired for meeting with. Sessions has since recused himself of any future investigation about Trump’s campaign and its ties to Russia. Trump took to Twitter on March 2 to defend Sessions saying “Jeff Sessions is an honest man. He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not….”

Wiretapping
Trump accused former President Barack Obama of wiretapping his phone at Trump Tower during the election in a tweet March 4, saying “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” Trump has not offered any evidence to support his claims, but has continued to tweet his displeasure.
