Trump Update: Russian Ties

The FBI recently announced the beginning of an official investigation on whether any members of the Trump campaign worked with Russia to sway the election in Trump’s favor.

Former National Security advisor, Michael Flynn was fired for his ties with Russia and misleading other members of Trump’s team about these ties 26 days into the Trump Administration. Flynn requested immunity from his own involvement with Russia. crimes in exchange for information regarding the investigation on Russian involvement in the election.

Speaking in September of last year, Flynn said “When you are given immunity, that means that you have probably committed a crime”

Trump seemed to defend Flynn’s request for immunity in a tweet he posted early Friday morning. “Mike Flynn should ask for immunity in that this is a witch hunt (excuse for big election loss), by media & Dems, of historic proportion!” In a later press conference, he ignored questions about the meaning behind the tweet.

The U.S. senate turned down the immunity request citing the early state of the investigation. House Intelligence Committee member and California Democrat Adam Schiff acknowledged the unusual nature of the request.

“We should first acknowledge what a grave and momentous step it is for a former National Security Adviser to the President of the United States to ask for immunity from prosecution,” Schiff said.
