Students time to start your edible engines

On Fri., Feb. 10, TWU will host the 19th Annual Edible Car Contest from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in Hubbard Hall.

The Edible Car Contest, open to Dallas-Fort Worth area students in grades 6-12, challenges participants to combine physics and mathematics with creativity. In teams of four (with a minimum of two female participants), students must build small cars entirely out of edible materials. The cars will be judged in a variety of categories including design, mobility and ingenuity/creativity. The teams compete against each other for the fastest race times by rolling their cars down an inclined race track. To be eligible, the “car” must roll on “wheels” down the ramp.

Teams may bring “cars” or “car parts” already put together or assemble minor parts upon arrival and they may only submit one car. The teams must submit the reasoning for choosing their theme for the car design and the themes will be announced during the contest.

There are many awards that teams can win during contest, including Most Unique Use of Materials, Best Theme, Best Accessories, Best Smelling, Most Nutritious Materials, Fastest and 2nd Fastest Race Time Award, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place.

All contestants receive a participation certificate. A total of $600 will be awarded; 1st – $300, 2nd – $200, and 3rd – $100 per team.

This event is open to the public and the College of Arts and Sciences would love for students to attend the event and see just how inventive and creative the children can be. Plus, how often do you get to see an edible car?
