Students re-charter Circle K on campus

Thanks to several student leaders, Circle K International is making its way back into TWU’s directory of organizations. Circle K is a wide-reaching service-based organization with approximately 500 clubs in 18 countries, according to the CKI website.

President Christy Nguyen explains: “We focus on community service, fellowship and leadership.”

Circle K has not been chartered at TWU since 2008. The prospect of re-chartering the organization came about in the summer of 2016, when Red River Division Lieutenant Governor Jesica  Rios reached out to Nguyen about pioneering the project.

According to Nguyen, the TWU chapter of Circle K has reached the twenty-member requirement and has officially been recognized by its sponsor, Kiwanis International. The chapter is projected to be re-chartered through the university by mid-April.

The Denton Kiwanis Club provides sponsorship and guidance to our university’s up-and-coming chapter and collaborates with its officers on service endeavors.  Kiwanis International also sponsors similar organization at the elementary and high school levels, such as Key Club, and gives college students a chance to work closely with both younger and older generations.

Students can expect to see plenty of upcoming volunteer and donation opportunities affiliated with Circle K. Current and ongoing projects include the “Our Soles for Need Souls” shoe drive that will conclude on March 26, and the “Comfort Dolls” project, in which volunteers create heart-shaped dolls for hospitalized children.

Overall, Circle K gives students the opportunity to act as ambassadors of goodwill. Nguyen says: “It gives you a leadership position. Just because we’re officers, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we take control of everything. We’ll actually put some members in charge of student projects, so that gives them a chance to connect with the community and build leadership skills.”

Secretary Amber Hooker says: “We really hope to impact the community by giving back, encouraging others on campus to give back, and by giving students at TWU the confidence to step up and take leadership roles.”

Interested students can get involved by attending bi-weekly meetings, and the next meeting will take place Thur., March 23 at 5 p.m. Location is to be announced. Students may stay up-to-date on announcements by filling out the contact sheet available on the “forms” page of the Circle K website: twucki.weebly.com. The organization is also on Instagram: @twu.cki.
