Although TWU is home to bright and intelligent students, it is also home to faculty and staff who work tirelessly to serve the students and uphold the university’s mission.
The faculty and staff members who make these programs possible hardly ever get recognition. However, this was not the case for John Weinkein, who has an Arts endowment fund and a juried student art exhibit in his honor.
Weinkein served as the chair of the Department of Visual Arts, where he worked toward the development the program. Weinkein left behind a legacy that inspired one of his former students to create this juried student art exhibition and an arts endowment fund.
The exhibit, which is aptly named the “John Weinkein Juried Student Exhibition,” is a competition-based exhibit that aims to highlight the work of Visual Arts majors, all while giving them a chance to win money.
Gallery Director Danielle Avram said the exhibition, which was started by a TWU alum, aimed to not only honor Weinkein, but to also give students a way to “show their work in a competitive setting and be eligible for monetary prizes.”
One of the students highlighted in this year’s exhibit is graduate student Rebecca Shewmaker. Shewmaker entered two pieces for the exhibit, and her painting, “CR 2716 near Allen’s Chapel,” won second place amongst the graduate entries.
Students interested in enjoying Shewmaker’s pieces and the rest of the exhibit are welcomed to view it in the Fine Arts building, which will be on display until Nov. 18.
