Dein meets students at the library and has them sign her petition.

Senior Kinesiology major and Senator for the College of Health Sciences Bria Dein has started a petition asking TWU to provide healthier food options on campus.

Dein will hold an event on April 5 for students to meet with her and Beth Lewis, Director of Dining Service Administration to discuss healthy changes students would like to see.

Dein created her petition after feeling frustration about TWU’s lack of healthy food options. At first, Dein started her petition alone, but gained the Student Senate’s support after presenting to them. So far Dein has gone, by herself, to populated areas of campus asking for signatures, but now other students from the student senate will help her do this. Dein also plans to make her petition online so students in Houston and Dallas can easily participate.

Dein explains: “I think just in general health is important, lots of people don’t think about health right now, we’re young, we think we’ll just exercise and be fine. Most of us have health related majors, but to work in the field and promote health, how can you promote health if you yourself are not healthy? If you’re not eating healthy now it is going to affect you in the long run.”

DSC_0075Healthier food options Dein will petition the university for depends on what students want. Possible food options Dein has discussed with Lewis include grass fed beef, juicing, organic fruits and vegetables, and healthier restaurants on campus.

Student who wish to contribute their ideas are welcome to attend the event on April 5 in the Student Union from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m..

Dein stated: “Students will have the opportunity to ask about student food options… this is the perfect time for them to come out and literally say what they want to see on campus.”
