Staff Picks – Dream Vacations

travelchannel.comEmily Nickles, Editor-in-Chief

Typically my dreams take me to where I don’t want to be, like high school or grocery stores, but I romanticize about vacation destinations and the wonderful adventures that can be had when traveling. Road trips bring out the creativity in me; they cause me to think about the world and my place in it. I don’t just want to imagine what the rest of the earth is like. I fantasize about the sunshine, warm rays enveloping me, giving me energy and making me feel alive. I want to lie on a California beach and rollerblade down streets filled with interesting people. I would take my car and a group of friends with me on a road trip to California in a heartbeat if I had the money to make it.

Some people crave warm breezes, sand between their toes and a cold drink in their hand. However, I am not one of those people. The humidity and hot temperature bum me out and irritate me. I want to go to a place that requires a sweater to battle the crisp, cold air. Greenland seems like the perfect place for me. In some parts of the country, the average temperatures do not exceed 50 degrees Fahrenheit – the perfect climate for someone like me. Greenland is home to the largest National Park and offers a variety of natural sights to explore. According to Greenland.com, they have more animals than people – who does not want that? I could spend days just exploring their natural landscapes and seeing their wildlife, which includes walruses and polar bears.

I often feel overwhelmed while thinking about all of the places I would like to travel and the things I would love to do. I tend to have travel anxiety, so while I would love to tour Europe or visit a touristy beach, the ideal vacation spot for me would be in the mountains of a Colorado town, population 500. Last summer, I went on a trip to Colorado where I hiked Mt. Democrat, white-water rafted in the Arkansas River and hiked trails for a week. It was the most peaceful and refreshing week I have had for as long as I can remember, and as we come close to finals week, all I want to do is escape to the bird’s eye view from the top of a 15,000 foot mountain.

My dream vacation is anywhere in Ireland, and I’m actually going this August. The feeling of stepping back in time has always been a dream of mine, and Ireland is one of the many places I could do that. I also love seeing where movies have been filmed, and there have been plenty filmed there because of the exceptionally beautiful scenery.

Of all the places I would like to travel to, a visit to India would qualify as my dream vacation. Of all the places in India I would like to visit, I’d have to go with Chennai, the capital of the state Tamil Nadu in the southern region. One of my best friends and several other close friends are from Chennai, and so I would like to see the place they grew up in.

To be honest, I’ve not taken many vacations outside of Texas. My family liked to stay close to home and I can’t say that I have not enjoyed it. I really do like the peaceful serenity associated with a place that I am familiar with. However, I also tend to have sometimes unrealistic dreams of places I’d like to visit. A place that has always been on my list is Ireland. Everything about this place excites me. I love the rich, green rolling hills that are always shown in pictures.  The cliffs and castles are breathtaking. I’d love to see it in person someday. I’m always swept away by Irish folk songs and music. And of course as someone who loves books and intricate designs, I’ve always wanted to see the Book of Kells. To really make it a dream vacation though, I would love to be able to explore the landscape of Ireland undisturbed. To be able to wander through that lush, beautiful scenery with maybe a friend or two would be simply wonderful. As a side note, I’m a huge fan of this Irish guy who makes a lot of gaming videos on Youtube, he’s kind of rambunctious but really sweet. It would be totally cool to meet him and just hang out.

My dream vacation would be a ski trip in New Mexico. I went there once with my family when I was 12 and it was one of my favorite vacations. Now that I’m older, I think I would enjoy skiing even more. In a perfect world, I would stay in a time-shared cabin near the ski lifts for two weeks at a time.

My dream vacation would be returning to Grand Cayman and to scuba dive every day.  All though I have had the privilege to travel to many different places I have never been so enamored by one destination. The people there are kind and relaxed, the water is the bluest I have ever seen, and the myriad of marine life would put any scuba diver in heaven.

Most of us who love to travel hope to stumble across secret worlds where we can let our imagination take flight. We can build characters and stories of love and war, of small achievements and big heartbreaks. But there is something about underwater worlds that can really fuel the imagination to surpass itself. You can find Atlantis, weave tales about the sinking of the Black Pearl, relive Spongebob, create a better story for the little Mermaid, dream new battles for Poseidon, shiver at the thought of Kraken – there is something incredibly fascinating about the colourful and mysterious worlds underwater.
