Rude or not, booing is free speech.

politicalcolumngraphic-copyOn Friday night, Vice-President-elect Mike Pence attended the Broadway show “Hamilton” where he was met with mixed reactions from the audience. Upon entering the theater, Pence was received with a mix of booing and applause. However, the audience continued to keep booing him throughout the play after certain songs ended.

After the performance, actor Brandon Victor Dixon made a statement to Pence while on stage: “We, sir – we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us…[applause] Our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us, all of us.”

President-elect Donald Trump released multiple statements on his twitter account reacting to the Hamilton performance and demanded an apology on behalf of Pence for the audience’s behavior.

Later, Pence, speaking for himself, shared with Fox News Sunday his reaction: “I did hear what was said from the stage. I can tell you I wasn’t offended by what was said. I will leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it.”

The “Hamilton” cast member Dixon refuses to apologize and is within his right to peacefully protest according to the first amendment.
