A quick, inside look of the TWU gymnastics team

The TWU gymnastics team started this season with a bang. The team set a home-opener record during their first meet. The following away meets were an uphill battle, but the team found its footing and got back on track.

On Sunday, Feb. 11, the team scored its highest score of the season. Senior All-Around gymnast and Midwest Independent Conference Performance of the Week (week of Feb. 14) honoree Schyler Jones said, “If we continue to trust each other, our gymnastics and ourselves, then we are going to be very successful this season.”

These gymnasts utilize every bit of time they have: whether it is studying or practicing, time management is something they all know well. Jones shared, “We often find time while traveling to study and complete our assignments.” Organization and planning helps the team with staying on track. “Personally, I keep a calendar on my wall of everything I have going on, so I see it everyday” said senior gymnast and MIC gymnast of the Week (week of Feb. 14) Mallory Moredock. Along the same lines, Jones said, “I manage my time by writing my priorities down in my planner.” Moredock explained that the team, as a whole, take their grades and school seriously.

Coach Lisa Bowerman said she keeps her energy high at meets to bring positive energy to the team. The team is close, and everyone has great relationships with one another, according to Moredock. She added, “Going into a competition and realizing that you are doing this for your team and representing the University is great motivation.” Jones said she is motivated by, “contributing to the team in any way that [she] can and by being passionate about what [she is] doing.” Moredock concluded, “This team has so much potential. I know that this team has a lot more to give, and we have so many more successes ahead of us.”

With success on their minds, the team goal is to qualify for the National Collegiate Athletic Association regionals. Bowerman said, “Our final three away meets this season will be a key factor in achieving that goal.” The team’s next home meet will be Sunday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Kitty Magee Arena.
