Despite the Pioneers recording their first conference win of 2017 this past weekend, the softball team fell to the Cameron University Aggies 2-1.

During game one, the first three innings were scoreless until the Aggies hit back-to-back doubles and one single to give Cameron a 2-0 lead. A pair of singles and a sacrifice fly led to another run in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Pioneers were able to pull ahead. Senior Utility Player Nicole Nordie brought in two runs with a hit to right field. Sophomore Designated Hitter Tylia Sylestine was able to bring in two more runs. Senior Outfielder Nicole Parnell then singled to bring in one run to put the score at 5-3. The Aggies responded with a home run and a double in the seventh inning to give Cameron a 7-5 advantage.

Junior Pitcher Abby Walker recorded a double that drove in two runs to put the score at 7-6. Unfortunately, a groundout to the pitcher left two stranded on base for a Cameron win. Walker took the loss with five strikeouts, four walks and six runs on eight hits.

The second game on Friday was close with no runs from either team through the first five and a half innings. Senior Infielder Katy Stephens hit a ball down the left field line to score a run, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Sylestine drove in another run with a shot to left field to put TWU up, 2-0.

During the top of the seventh inning, the Aggies cut the lead in half with a homerun by their leadoff hitter to put the score at 2-1. The Pioneers recorded two outs with a pop out and a fly out by Cameron, before First-year Utility Player Hazel Puempel caught a foul ball for the final out of the game with a score of 2-1. Senior Pitcher Tori Bice recorded the win with five strikeouts, three walks and only four hits.

On Saturday, the Pioneers fought hard, but ultimately fell to the Aggies. Throughout the first four innings, the Aggies scored 5 runs to the Pioneers’ 1. Junior Infielder Alexis Elizondo hit an RBI single to make the score 5-2. Sylestine and Bice both hit an RBI single to pull the Pioneers closer with a score of 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

In the seventh inning, the Pioneers came close to winning the game after Puempel hit a single, Elizondo drew a walk, and Sophomore Catcher Melanie Stephens was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Unfortunately, the Pioneers struck out swinging to end the game with a final score of 6-4. Walker recorded the loss with three strikeouts, one walk and five runs on six hits.

The Pioneers will travel to No. 2 West Texas A&M for a three-game series starting on Fri., Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. and continuing on Sat., Feb. 25 for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
