Pioneers Sweep Final Home Series

In the final home series of the 2017 season, the Pioneers swept the Falcons of the University of Texas at Permian Basin 3-0.

In game one, the Pioneers and Falcons were scoreless throughout the first three and a half innings. However, that changed as junior Infielder Alexis Elizondo hit a single to left center field to score senior Pitcher Hailey Dixon and senior Pitcher/Utility Player Tori Bice, putting the Pioneers on top, 2-0.

 

The Falcons responded the next inning by loading the bases and scored a run after a Pioneers error. UTPB recorded another three runs to give them the edge, 4-2. Senior Infielder Katy Stephens got her second home run of the year and first-year Utility Player Hazel Puempel singled to make the score tied. In the seventh inning, senior Infielder Morgan Harrison got a single and after a sacrifice fly and wild pitch, was able to score the final run of the game after Nordie hit a single for the walk-off win.

 

Junior Pitcher Abby Walker had nine strikeouts, two hits and three walks. With the victory Fri. night, Head Coach Genny Stidham recorded career win no. 600. In her three seasons at TWU, she has a 127-81 record.

 

Texas Woman’s 10, Texas-Permian Basin 2

On Sat., April 22, eight seniors were recognized and added two last home wins to their TWU careers.

 

After being halted Fri. night due to severe weather, game two resumed play Sat. morning in the third inning. The Falcons scored one run in the top of the third and the Pioneers responded at the bottom of the inning by driving in two runs and putting the score at 9-3. UTPB responded with one more run in the next inning before senior Utility Player Nicole Nordie ended the game with a walk-off hit.

 

Nordie was perfect at the plate, tallying three RBI and scoring two runs by hitting three-for-three in the game. Senior Pitcher Hailey Dixon received the win after facing 14 batters in three and a third innings and allowed two runs. Bice also pitched in the game and allowed only one hit. The Pioneers won by run-rule in the fifth by a score of 10-2.

In the final game, the Pioneers started off red-hot scoring three runs in the first inning and holding the Falcons scoreless. At the top of the third, UTPB scored one run before sophomore Utility Player Tylia Sylestine recorded her eighth home run for the 2017 season.

 

After the Falcons brought in another run in the fifth, the Pioneers got another run-rule victory after getting five runs off of five hits. Senior Outfielder Logan Polasek and senior Outfielder Nicole Parnell each singled and were then brought in by a triple from Nordie. Puempel laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought in Nordie and then Bice hit a double to bring in the final two runs.

 

Senior Pitcher Katie Hickey pitched three innings and received the win while junior Pitcher Abby Walker got the save in the final two innings. TWU won the final home game with a score of 9-2.

 

The Pioneers will travel to Texas A&M Commerce for the final series of the regular season next week. There will be a doubleheader on Fri., April 28 at 5 and 7 p.m. and a single game on Sat., April 29 at 1 p.m.
