Pioneers start the season with 2 losses

TWU Pioneers failed to gain a win in their first two games of the season against Tarleton State and Angelo State The Tarleton State TexAnns and the Angelo State Belles are both top contenders in the conference.

In the Angelo State game, the Pioneers fell in each set with the scores 25-12, 25- 16, and 25-18. Senior Sara Oxford and Sophomore Makayla Mayfield had the team’s highest kills with six each. Oxford, Senior Briley Cole and Senior Anna McGee each had three blocks.

As with the Tarleton game, TWU gained a lead in the second set, but were unable to hold it. The Belles were able to stay ahead for the remainder of the set.

In the game against Tarleton State, they totaled a season low of 20 kills, with McGee scoring six and first-year Courtney Noel with five. The scores were 25-14, 25-20 and 25-18. In the second set, McGee was the first player to score and the Pioneers kept the lead until the TexAnns made it 5-4. The TexAnns gained four more points, but the Pioneers kept the margin to three points, until they were called on a violation, which allowed the TexAnns to win that set.

Despite the tough losses, the Pioneers are working hard and learning from these experiences. Interim Head Coach Jessica Beener said: “We opened conference play against two of the top teams in the conference. Those games gave our team the opportunity to see where we need to be and gave our new players a glimpse into what Lone Star Conference play is like. We hope to continue to improve throughout the season, and I feel our team is ready to do that.”

The team will be back at it again Tuesday at 6 p.m. with a game at Texas A&M-Commerce.
