Pioneers Split Road Trip

On Sat., Oct. 29 and Tues., Nov. 1 the Pioneer volleyball team played two road games against Texas A&M Kingsville and Midwestern State, respectively. The team split the trip with a loss against Texas A&M Kingsville and a crucial win against Midwestern State.

 

Texas A&M Kingsville (L)

In the game against the Javelinas, the Pioneers started off strong and won the first set 25-18. Unfortunately, the team then fell in three straight sets despite senior middle blocker Sara Oxford recording a team-high 15 kills and junior middle blocker and outside hitter Haley Collins and first-year middle blocker Courtney Noel each adding 10.

Even though the Pioneers hit well around the Javelinas defense by only allowing three blocks from the team, the team also tallied 18 errors compared to the 15 recorded by the Javelinas. The Pioneers lost the match three sets to one.

 

Midwestern State (W)

With the win over the Midwestern State Mustangs, the Pioneers notched their second Lone Star Conference sweep of the season to help keep their playoff hopes alive. In the game against the Mustangs, the Pioneers had a higher amount of kills, 34, and hitting percentage, .098, than the Mustangs who had 28 kills and a .041 hitting percentage. Both first-year setter Katy Ranes and Noel had game bests with Ranes having 27 assists and Noel tallying four blocks.

The Pioneers will return home Fri., Nov. 4 to play Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. The team will also host the last home game of the season to honor the three seniors on Sat., Nov. 5 against Western New Mexico at 2 p.m.
