The Pioneer’s Narrow Loss with the Lions

Pioneers vs Lion Score Recap

Texas Woman’s soccer team had a great game with Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday at Lion Soccer Field. First year Haley Ward ran past the Lion’s defense and drove a shot into the goal at the 33 minute mark, taking the Pioneers to the lead until the 51 minute where First Year Leslie Campuzano scored off of a two yard free kick bringing the game to a one-one tie.

Lions Take the lead

Another goal was scored seven minutes later on the 57 minute mark by Lion’s Third Year Sophie Haywood with the assists by Campuzano and First Year Michelle Kotlik. At the moment, the game was falling towards the Lions at two to one. The gap to victory widened at the 87 minute with another score against TWU once again by Sophie Haywood, who took a shot from the left side of the goal and scored it into TWU’s right side net. Haywood’s second goal came with assist from Second Year Jessika Coronado.

The Final Minute

The score was then three to one with the Lions in the lead until Haley Ward, with less than a minute on the clock, once again dove into the Lion’s defense and took a scoring shot from the right field that sunk into the Lion’s net. There was less than 37 seconds remaining, and TWU was not able to shorten that one point lead the Lions had. The victory went to the Lions with a score of three to two.

Coach’s Thoughts

Head Coach Babak Abouzar commented on the game, as posted on TWU’s Game by Recap Becca Walters, “We scored a great goal in the first half but took our foot off the pedal. You can’t do that with a team like Commerce. Our team kept battling back and got one back, but we just ran out of time.”
