Pioneers aim for the win

Amazing prizes and a whole lot of sweat are back on campus this year from Sept. 6 – Oct. 17.

TWU has joined the Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge for the second time, in hopes of taking first place this year. Activities such as walking, biking, yoga, and even bird-watching and star-gazing qualify as point-earning. Up to five different activities can be logged per day to count toward your personal and TWU team points, as long as you do each activity for 30 minutes. Everyone from the three TWU campuses can participate, including faculty, staff, alumni and students. Registration can be accessed online or by downloading the Outdoor Nation app on Apple or Android phones.

Learning from last year’s experience, Associate Director of Fitness and Recreation Karrie Fletcher warns participants not to get burned out from doing the same activities throughout the competition. Fletcher goes on to say, “I think [students] just need to participate in varied activities. Don’t bike every day for 6 weeks, do something different.”

TWU took third place in the Outdoor Nation Campus Challenge last year with over 7,354 hours of activity logged, and is ready to take the win this year. As of Aug. 30, TWU had the most participants registered for the competition out of every school selected to participate with 661 people registered. Fletcher concludes by saying: “This isn’t really about winning National Outdoor Champion, it’s about students and faculty and staff, all of us, taking care of ourselves, getting outdoors, relaxing in a hammock and stargazing like we’ve never done before. That’s what it’s really about.”
