Pioneer Softball sweeps competition

At their last home games on Mar. 23 and 24, the Pioneers took on the state’s fifth-ranked team, the San Angelo Belles. Even though the Pioneers outhit the Belles 13-12, the five game winning streak was ended with a 13-7 loss after three grand slams by the Belles on Friday, according to TWU Athletics.

Their loss did not stop their momentum as the Pioneers took on San Angelo University again on Sat. The Pioneers took down the Belles 6-5 in their second game, but lost 4-1 by the Belles in their final game of the series, according to TWU Athletics.

Some spotlight athletes include senior pitcher Abby Walker who pitched 10.1 innings for the weekend with 10 strikeouts, junior designated hitter and UT (utility player) Tylia Sylestine with two home-runs and sophomore UT Hazel Puempel with 13 putouts for the weekend, according to TWU Athletics.

Overall this season, the Pioneers have a current record of 20-10 with a Lone Star Conference record of 8-4. At their next game, the Pioneers will take on Tarleton State University in Stephenville on April 6 and 7. The team will return back to the Pioneer Field to take on Midwestern State University. The games against MSU will be Sat., April 14 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., as well as on Sun., April 15 at 12 p.m.
