All is Fair in Rape and White Privilege
What do Brock Turner and Lena Dunham have in common? They’re both rapists. The difference being, Lena Dunham is still worshipped as one of the golden-girl, white feminist icons. Turner, after facing up to 14 years for raping an unconscious woman behind a dumpster, was only sentenced to six months because apparently, his fragile psyche wouldn’t be able to handle the emotional damage that would befall him in prison, which is an injustice in itself. The real gag is that he only spent three months in prison because he was “oh-so-well-behaved.” When social media caught wind of his release, there was no shortage of memes and tweets. @maisie_williams said on Instagram: “I’ve been using the same tube of mascara for longer than Brock Turner was in jail.”
Dunham published a book called “Not That Kind of Girl,” in which she describes instances of cruel and unusual experimentation on her one-year-old sister when Dunham herself was seven years old. Her book should actually be called Now That’s What I Call Sexual Abuse, with great hits such as, “Basically, anything a sexual predator might do to woo a small suburban girl— I was trying.” Possibly the most disturbing, “Grace was sitting up, babbling and smiling, and I leaned down between her legs and carefully spread open her vagina.” Dunham goes on to describe even masturbating next to her sleeping sister in the bed that they shared. In response, Dunham has tried to pass this off as something quirky that seven-year-olds just do. In reality, this is just something that a woman who benefits from white privilege and worship of fans who will go to bat for her no matter what gets away with. Let’s be honest, if Dunham or Turner were people of color, their lives would now be over.
Dunham has recently appeared in an anti-rape ad-campaign in support of Turner’s rape victim, interestingly enough. Social media immediately called Dunham out on her blatant hypocrisy. Dunham even earned her own hashtag, #DropDunham. @kantbot2000 said on Twitter: “@lenadunham, who raped her own sister, and then lied about being raped herself in the same book, wants you to know rape culture is real.” Taking aim at Dunham being the face of Planned Parenthood, @chiefelk said on Twitter: “@ppact you have your own sexual assault hotline and services. The face of your org should not be a sexual predator. #dropdunham.”
