Non-Traditional Student Week comes to campus

The first week of November TWU will host events each day in honor of our Non-Traditional student population.

Non-traditional students include commuter, online and veteran students, as well as students who are returning to school or attending school while raising a family. The Campus Alliance and Resource Education department has hosted Non Traditional Student Week since 2005 in the hope of connecting with students that do not connect with campus in the same way as students who live on campus.

Assistant Director of Veterans and Non-Traditional Student Services Brittanie Romine said: “We just continue to celebrate it because it’s very important to capture all students in a fun week for them to celebrate themselves here on campus.”

Events will include two commuter breaks, the Fall Apartment Fair with roughly 14 different apartment complexes and an eLounge on the topic of graduation. Based off survey responses from last year improvements have been to Non-Traditional Student Week, namely to commuter breaks.

Romine said: “[Students] wanted to see some different department and one of the top ones was advisors. Some students aren’t here at the eight to five period, so if they’re on their way home from work or coming in from getting their kiddo they can talk to an advisor.”

Commuter breaks will have an advisor present at all times to answer student’s questions and will regularly rotate in advisors from different programs and colleges. Students can look forward to free food and give-aways at events throughout the week, as well as the opportunity to connect with university faculty and staff and other nontraditional students.

Romine said: “[Students] can expect some fun, some free give-aways, some free snacks at the commuter breaks, or really any of the events. It’s just a good way to get involved here on campus and meet some other non-traditional students that they might not be able to meet.”
