Two weeks ago, Texas Woman’s University welcomed Katherine Green on campus to take her new title as the general counsel and associative vice president for compliance. She is already making herself at home on the 14th floor of the ACT building.
Green may be new to the university, but the role is not new to her. She comes to campus with years of experience under her belt as the associate general counsel for the University of North Texas System and, previously, held similar titles with the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas System. She has also served as general counsel for the Railroad Commission of Texas and the Texas Commission on Human Rights in addition to her service as the associate general counsel for the Texas Education Agency and the Office of the Texas Attorney General.
“I’ve been practicing law for 25 years,” Green said. “I’ve spent 13 years of those years in higher ed[ucation], so I’m very versed with issues that take place in higher education from a legal perspective.”
With her new titles at TWU, Green will ensure that the university is in compliance with laws, regulations and policies while serving as secretary to the Texas Woman’s University Board of Regents.
“The office of general counsel touches every aspect and component of the institution, so there’s no area that we do not touch.”
The work that she will be doing varies from handling student affairs to litigation, which she has a firm foundation of experience in.
“No day is the same day,” Green said. “Every day is something different; something new.”
Her daily routine is unpredictable, but her past experiences help her to be prepared and adapt to what the day holds.
“My time in higher ed[ucation] has been very useful and very helpful,” Green said. “Higher education is unique to private practice, even state agencies. The issues are unique. The challenges are unique, and so having had prior experience, with that has been very helpful.”
Out of her own initiative, Green chose the position at TWU after outgoing general counsel Destinee Waiters announced she was leaving last July. Her skill-set, experience and background showed her that she was an ideal fit for what the university was looking for.
“I love the mission at TWU,” Green said. “I love the vision; I love the work, the engagement, the purpose…the TWU community is very warm, very caring, engaging, welcoming…I’ve appreciated the warm welcome, and I’ve enjoyed the work I’ve been able to engage in.”
