Letter from the Editor

JohnnaAs my second year of being on The Lasso staff is coming to a close, I am proud of how my staff members have dedicated time and hard work in order to produce great issues for you, our fellow peers, to read.

By covering stories about events hosted on our campus and other events in the community, as well as featuring other students and our professors, we hope this past semester has made you feel more connected to campus and the environment around you.

I encourage you to find The Lasso staff member’s contact information, located to the left of this story, and let us know what you would like to see covered more in your student newspaper and ways you think we can better connect you to TWU’s atmosphere.

Every spring, The Lasso attends a state convention, the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, where we sit through countless sessions to gain knowledge on how to improve our writing and how to better cover stories and design our newspaper. Another important aspect of TIPA are the in-person contests. This year we brought four staff members and competed in seven contests; editorial writing, feature writing, critical review, news writing, headline writing, copy editing and front page design.

This convention we brought home a record-breaking total of 18 awards, two of which were in-person. Reporter Morgan Villavaso competed in the critical review contest, where she won first place, and I received Honorable Mention in the copy editing contest.

In addition to the in-person contests, we review all of the published articles in The Lasso for the past calendar year to submit in the previously published contests. Among the previously published awards, The Lasso received first place for the Special Edition with the Orientation issue printed last summer, third place for Best Interactivity with our website and Honorable Mention for Overall Excellence for a Literary Magazine with our 2016 Daedalian publication.

In this issue we have great articles about new faces at TWU, such as the new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Alan Utter on page one and the new Head Volleyball coach Jeff Huebner on page six. There were some award ceremonies held on campus last week such as the Pioneering Spirits Awards on page three and the Founder’s luncheon, where the most prestigious award TWU provides was given out, also on page three. Just like in every issue, we have the staff picks section on page five, where we are going to talk about our “after spring break” motivations.

Following this issue, The Lasso will have an additional print issue on April 19, an online issue on the week of April 24-27 and a special graduation issue on May 3, which will have all of the Spring 2017 graduates’ names in the paper
