Keeping up with DACA deadlines

As of Sept. 5, 2017, President Trump made the decision to end DACA.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals was an American immigration policy that, according to Berkley, allowed some individuals who entered the country illegally as minors to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and to be eligible for a work permit.

TWU President and Chancellor Dr. Carine M. Feyten sent an email to students covering the topic of DACA and how the university will be handling it. Feyten announced “Texas Woman’s University remains committed to serve its students, regardless of national origin,” and even though there is a new law put into place, TWU is working to allow all students to finish their education.

On Sept. 19, a seminar was held to give students more information about DACA. Proyecto Inmigrante ICS, Inc. attended to offer their help for those who needed assistance with paperwork or had questions about the current state of DACA. Student Legal Services Advisor Jerry Parr stated, “This is your opportunity to do it [DACA renewal], take advantage of what you can do and that is that renewal and that is very limited, so you need to act now to do that.”

The urgent DACA renewal deadline is Oct. 5, 2017 and DACA renewal is limited to those whose DACA is expiring between Sept. 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018.

As always, TWU has opened up many resources for those affected by this new decision.  tudent Legal Services and Diversity, Inclusion & Outreach are here to help students take legal action and walk through the steps to renewal. Counseling and Psychological Services are available for students to talk with someone in a safe and confidential environment.

Feyten wants students to know that they will always be a “valuable part of Texas Woman’s University community,” and TWU’s mission is to “educate students in an inclusive environment that embraces diversity.”  TWU cares about its students and wants them to feel as if campus is a safe place where they can share their thoughts and receive an education.

Congressman Brad Sherman of the San Fernando Valley stated, “Under the policy just released by the Administration it is critically important that those with DACA work permits that expire on or before March 5, 2018, apply for renewal immediately—urge you not to wait until October 5, 2017, deadline.”  The process of renewal can take time, so the sooner it is done, the better the outcome.

If any student has questions or concerns, do not hesitate to ask. There are several resources including CAPS and Student Legal Services; and Proyecto Inmigrante (located in Dallas at 415 E Airport Fwy#150) is reaching out to those in need, but you must make an appointment by phone at (888) 793-2182 ext. 3201.
