creditcampus theatre copyThis Friday, “Into the Woods” comes to Music Theatre of Denton for the coming and following weekends. Be prepared to be bewitched and enchanted by the musical theatre classic.

Production co-director and musical director John Norine, Jr. said in an email: “Each show has its own unique challenges and tribulations – and this one was no different. [Composer and lyricist] Stephen Sondheim is particularly known for his difficult music and lyrics. It’s a common misconception that ‘Into the Woods’ is an ‘entry level’ Sondheim show; the truth is much different.”

Despite the production’s challenges, the Music Theatre of Denton is adequately prepared to put on a good show. Norine outlined the history of the local theatre organization: “This is Music Theatre of Denton’s 31st season, so at this point we’ve had scores of shows under our belt. The organization started as the Denton Light Opera Company and specialized in lighter fare, such as Gilbert and Sullivan. In the late 1990s, the organization became more interested in producing musicals, and thus the group rebranded as Music Theatre of Denton. We’ve been fortunate in the last several years to produce the very best in classic and modern Broadway fare, ranging from the family friendly to more mature oriented comedies.”

Speaking on the effects for the production’s fantastical elements, Norine responded: “Well, we do utilize some smoke and other lighting effects. How? Come to the show to find out!”

Norine concluded: “At the end of the day, if we have entertained the audience with the best possible show we can, then we have succeeded. As an organization, we are dedicated to putting on high quality theatre that entertains and inspires the people around us.”

“Into the Woods” will have Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances at 2 p.m. The show opens this Friday and ends Sunday, March 13.
