Human library seeks living books

For the first time ever, a Human Library is coming to the Blagg-Huey Library on April 23 from 12 to 5 pm. According to the Human Library website, the organization is “a worldwide movement for social change” that loans out Living Books –  real people who share their stories with the people who come to hear them.

In charge of the fun, Flora Ligeti, a Health Sciences Librarian at TWU, is excited for this historical event. The other university in town, UNT, has been hosting a Human Library for the past six years, and Ligeti is looking forward to bringing the movement to TWU. Typically, Living Books embody the stories of people that often face prejudice, stereotyping or racism in society. Since the goal of the Human Library is to encourage empathy between people on a personal level, the confessional and explanation style of the stories being shared means to create an atmosphere of understanding.

Currently, there are eight Living Books signed up to share their stories with people interested in checking them out, but there’s still room for more stories to share. The titles of the Living Books that are available for check-out during this event are as follows: Adopted, British Immigrant, Campus Police, First in the Family, Muslim, PTSD/Vegan, Stress-Anxiety and Weight Loss Surgery. When you choose a title, you’ll be able to spend 20 minutes listening to their personal experience with the topic and be able to ask questions. But if you’re more interested in sharing, there’s room for your story too. Countless examples show that the act of sharing your experiences is therapeutic and affirming. Be bold. Share your story. Make our community a more empathetic place to be.
