Recently, the TWU chapter of the national history honor society Phi Alpha Theta was distinguished with this year’s Best Chapter Award. According to a TWU press release, the Denton campus chapter has received this commemoration for the fourth year in a row. TWU is ranked amongst the likes of Georgetown University, Louisiana Tech University, Cal-State Fullerton and the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and the Phi Alpha Theta chapter at TWU is the only chapter at a Texas university to receive this award.

University chapters that receive this award are given a prize of $250. The TWU chapter will use the awarded money to buy history books for local Selwyn College Preparatory School, and TWU students will read these books to Selwyn students. The campus organization used its award in the same way last year.

Associate professor of history and advisor for Phi Alpha Theta Dr. Jacob Blosser said in a TWU press release: “There is nothing more important than putting a book into the hands of a child. We are delighted to use our Best Chapter Award to increase the Selwyn School’s already fantastic collection of elementary-age history books.”

Blosser also said: “The TWU chapter’s large, active membership is committed to fostering academic excellence through participation in national conferences, through our peer-reviewed student journal, through strong community partnerships, and through an active calendar of lectures, service projects, and film screenings.”

The TWU chapter of Phi Alpha Theta has expanded over the past several years. The chapter has sent upwards of 80 student speakers to national events, in which the students expound upon their areas of research and their resulting works. The chapter also releases an annual journal, titled “Ibid: A Student History Journal.” With “Ibid,” the chapter has also received recognition.

Blosser added: “This national award recognizes us for doing all the things TWU does best – putting our students first and advancing their career aspirations.”
