Gymnastics Team Moves On To Regionals

On Sat., March 18, the gymnastics team placed second at the Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Championships with an overall score of 194.000. 

 

Although the team came in behind Lindenwood University (194.675), they defeated Illinois State (193.575), University of Illinois at Chicago (192.750), Southeast Missouri State (192.500) and Centenary (190.350) to move on to the NCAA Regionals. 

 

The first event for the Pioneers, the uneven bars, put the team in a competitive position. Junior All-Around Schyler Jones led off with a 9.525 and first-year All-Around Bria Northrop received a 9.800. Sophomore Uneven Bars specialist Jenna Cashmore anchored with a 9.300 to give the team a total score of 47.775. The Pioneers second event, balance beam, helped them stay in a strong position under 2017 MIC Coach of the Year Lisa Bowerman with a final score of 48.325. The highest scores of the event belonged to junior All-Around Mallory Moredock who received a 9.775 and junior uneven bars/balance specialist Vincent who got a 9.675.  

  

Sophomore Vault specialist Kaitlyn Holley made her season debut with a score of 9.725 on floor exercise and Moredock got a career-high score of 9.875 to help give the Pioneers a 49.075 score and the second-place slot. The final rotation for the team, vault, was a strong event for the Pioneers. Moredock matched her career-high for the event at 9.775 and Jones received the highest score for vault with a 9.850 to put the score for the Pioneers at 48.825. 

  

The gymnastics team also had five athletes earn All-Conference honors for their performances: Jones, Northrop, Moredock, Alderman and Simpson. 

 

The Pioneers will participate in the NCAA Regionals round on Sat., Apr. 1 at 4 p.m. in Fayetteville, AR. We wish the Pioneers the best of luck!
